Rin Tsuchime, the unimpressive, nice guy-hero of the teen comedy Shuffle (2005) has been living with his childhood friend Kaede for eight years--since both his parents and her mother were killed in an accident. A typical harem-comedy heroine, Kaede is an adorable doormat who cheerfully declares, "Taking care of you is what I live for!" Life grows more complicated when two new students arrive at Verbena Academy: Sia, daughter of the King of the Gods, and Nerine, daughter of the King of the Demons. Naturally, they both have crushes on Rin--as does Primula, another girl from the Demon-Realm. Shuffle tries very hard to be funny, but the results feel more effortful than amusing. Kaede, Sia, and Nerine have hordes of admirers who chase Rin all over the school. The King of the Gods and the King of the Demons drink and fuss like watered-down versions of Genma Saotome and Suon Tendo in Ranma 1/2.
